GEOGRAPHERS ATTEND ROYAL SOCIETY 350th ANNIVERSARY LECTURE AT W5
When the Earth Shook: Understanding Near Future Earthquakes and Their Impact
The A-Level Geography class along with a group from Mount Lourdes Grammar School visited W5 at the Odyssey Complex on 10 February 2010 to attend a lecture relating to their study of plate tectonics. The lecture was delivered by Professor John McCloskey, a world renowned expert in earthquake forecasting who is based at the University of Ulster, Coleraine. Professor McCloskey explained how GPS technology is used to calculate stresses in the earth’s crust and how this information can be used to assist governments and humanitarian organisations plan for future earthquake events.
