An eager group of Young Environmentalists from Year 9 has taken action against the amount of recyclable waste going into classroom bins. By providing recycling bins in classrooms and purchasing additional blue bins, they hope to see a marked improvement in the amount of waste going to landfill from their school.
A member of the group said “When Mrs Goodman asked in assembly if anyone would be interested in joining a group called the Young Environmentalists, I was eager to learn more about the group. I joined the group because I wanted to make a difference and promote caring for the environment in our school and local community.”
Another member said “I was glad that I could contribute directly to a cause that would help the environment because I feel that it is a very pressing issue that must be addressed immediately.”
The teacher-leader of the group, Mrs Grainne Goodman said “The girls have been very dedicated to the cause. They have worked strenuously contacting outside agencies that could help them bring their idea to fruition. I am glad to see their hard work has paid off and hopefully the whole school will get on board and we will see an improvement. I hope that our efforts will encourage local public representatives and our District Council to reflect on how they can support schools and colleges in sustainable waste management.”
As well as taking action in school, the group has produced a report detailing their efforts which they are entering in the Young Environmentalists Competition.
